The hotel was founded in 1955 by Charlotte and Charly Glaus.
The founder was a ticket clerk for Swiss Federal Railways who, together with his wife, decided to build the first motel in Switzerland. This small motel with its very basic furnishings successfully attracted the first “motorized” tourists who visited Ticino from across the Alps. The economic difficulties and simplicity of this small motel can be deduced from the first price list for rooms:
Room with glass windows CHF 6.
Room without glass windows CHF 4.
A small dusty road connected the establishment, which at the time was located in the agricultural area of Losone, to the main road.
Over the years, the small motel continued to grow until, at the end of the 1970s, it became a five-star hotel. During this period, the first three of the five children, Ursula, Silvia, and Michela, also became actively involved in the hotel.
August 7, 1978, marked a sad chapter in the history of the Albergo Losone. After several days of constant rain, the Maggia River overflowed and flooded the hotel. The devastation was almost total, but miraculously there were no casualties. Thanks to the voluntary efforts of the guests, the hard work of the staff, and the determination of Charly Glaus, the hotel was able to reopen its doors after a few months. A higher embankment was subsequently built.
In 1991-92, a generational change took place. Management passed to his daughter Ursula and her husband Thomas Mosberger, who ran the hotel until 1995.
From 1995 onwards, management was entrusted to his second youngest son, Diego Glaus.
Since 2003, the Albergo Losone has been named “best Swiss hotel for families” by the prestigious magazine Sonntagszeitung.
